Grand (Big) Traverse Bay

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” CS Lewis

Looking North up the beach...

Here is a good beach. This beach is (in my opinion) the “best beach that people don’t know about” in the entire Keweenaw Peninsula. Most locals know about all the beaches along the “Color Tour” or “Lake Superior Circle Tour” routes in the Copper Country. But I’m willing to bet this beach has slipped the “beaches I’ve been to” list of most Copper Country residents, and certainly this beach would not be known by visitors/tourists.

And looking South down the beach... w/Huron Mountains across the water.

The beach is located on the eastern side of the Keweenaw, just South of Gay, and just East of Rice Lake. The scenery en-route to the beach is really nice, and it’s not very “out of the way” so it’s easy to get to. A map of the area is here. The beach is a really nice, long, sugar-sand beach with a LOT of room for claiming a spot with a beach blanket and cooler. Probably enough room to set up your own volleyball or badminton net and a horseshoe pit too. Point is, it’s a big beach. Just look at the pictures, and the map – it’s nearly 3 miles long!

Sandy bottomed bay... Very nice.

There is also camping on-site, but a permit must be obtained from the Schoolcraft Township Office in Lake Linden. There is only tent camping, but the sites are nice. Lots of nice blueberry patches in the area too and the Schoolcraft Township Mink Farm Day Park is on the beach as well. That is right next to the lighthouse. In short, this is a good beach for all beach related activities, and it is very unlikely to be crowded. I would highly recommend it, and I do.

Camping Site...

And the Mink Farm Day Park... But there's no mink farm that I could see.

*Disclaimer* – Parts of this beach may be private…

You have a disclaimer here about some of the beach being private. There is not private beach on the ocean or the Great Lakes. Despite what the property owners will tell you, nobody can own property below the 100 year high water mark.

I used to own waterfront in Bay Mills, and have checked Federal law on this (Massachusetts and Maine are exempt from this rule based upon the original Massachusetts Bay charter from England).

Also, I didn’t see it, but you should check all of the beaches along the Curly Lewis Highway in Chippewa County — very sandy and very private.

This is my favorite beach by far, and try to get there as often as possible, but you’re right–I’ve never actually seen any mink.
