“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
The Houghton side of the West Portage Entry is what the locals call “Breakers.” There is, of course, another break-wall on this (South) side of the canal. Breakers is unique though, in that the beach is entirely the result of local mining… so I believe. Its all stamp sand. Breakers is popular for students at Michigan Tech – seems like there’s always some group having a bonfire. The drive out to Breakers is nice too – along the Houghton Canal Road. Breakers also has a nice pavilion. A winter trip is always fun here too. I’ve had some great snowshoeing trips and xc skiing trips out in this area. In fact, I’ll post some winter pics which you can find here.
One of my most memorable visits was on November 9th, 2005. There was an incredible wind storm that day, with sustained winds of over 50 mph. Its difficult to tell how big these waves are, but they were literally crashing over the wall and landing on the other side. The next photos are from that day, but I have a few better ones in another album. Check out the stormy photos from 2005.
And this dive is NOT from that windy day…
